Today I want to talk about something I’m very passionate about. It is a hard topic to share but I had to get it out there, so here it goes… This topic seems to be one a lot of beauty, wedding and event professionals have a hard time discussing… the topic is paying a Makeup Artist what we’re worth. Now this goes for makeup artists who are seasoned and have been working for 5 or more years as a freelancer and understand how to do every eye shape, face shape and skin color they could possibly come in contact with on a job. To be honest… if you can’t do that, you shouldn’t be charging money for your services.
So I know at the end of the day makeup services are a luxury, meaning it is a “want” not a “need”. Those who are fortunate to be able to afford professional hair and makeup services I’m talking to you. First off let me say, thank you for wanting to hire us, you help keep food on a single mom’s table, an art student in school and an aspiring entrepreneur in business. But can we have real talk for just a min? Ok, let’s put on our big girl panties. It’s time to start paying us what we’re worth. I’m talking to you fellow wedding vendor or beauty industry professional. I’m talking to you bride and aspiring model. Do your research. If your looking to hire a $$ a face makeup artist, check their business out! Are they insured? Licensed? Are they operating legally? Do they have knowledge of sanitation and product quality? Do they offer airbrush and multiple service options? So many factors go into a makeup artists pricing. There is so much more to what we do than just paint faces. We do so many things leading up to a brides wedding or clients event day, just to name a few….. We create a bridal schedule, we create contracts and hire lawyers, we are constantly cleaning and making sure our kit is up to par and buying the best professional quality makeup products, we are organizing, calling, booking, emailing and networking our butts off! We take continuing education classes and look for the best rates on liability and property insurance. We network with other artists to stay relevant and keep our skill level excellent. If I can be as frank to say, the artists you want to hire are in the $$$ range not the $$ range, you truly do get what you pay for and your face is a precious thing, treat it right and hire someone who can make the most important day, your wedding or event day, truly the best ever!
To those artists charging $$ a face, why? You are worth more than that. You are hurting the industry as a whole and teaching clients to not pay what we’re truly worth. Let’s all step up! If your charging that because you need more practice, go practice but don’t charge a client that’d be willing to pay $$$ to just get work for “experience” go do a bunch of styled shoots, work on family and friends to get your name out there, network, hustle! You’re not alone, we all started from the bottom and made our way. I, by no means am at my ideal price and ideal client yet. It takes time, patience and lots of practice! My goal is to have a long term mindset and do today what will set me up for tomorrow. I’m in this for the long haul not to just make a quick buck. I want every man or women that sits in my chair to have an experience they will never forget!
Brides and those seeking professional makeup services… Think twice about who, what and why you hire that person. Do your research and make sure you are truly getting what you want and what you pay for. Your wedding day is the day you’ll be looking back on for years and years to come. So make sure you truly hire a professional, we have your back and won’t let you down!
