Countdown to Summer Vacation!!!

This may not be something to actually write a blog about but why not! This is the first summer in 4 years my hubby and I are taking a legit summer vacation and to say I’m freaking out excited is an understatement!!! Do any of you remember that movie ” The Last Song” …. (The early days of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth love story)  Well that’s where we’ll be going! Tybee Island, GA! Tybee has such serious charm, for all those that know the amazing charm of Savannah, GA… this is that, plus a laid back beach attitude, yes please! My grandparents own a beach house in Tybee Island and its always been a family tradition to go and stay. This time will be all together different though, our best friends from VA will be joining us whom we haven’t seen in 4 years!!!! SO SO SO EXCITED!!!

I have such amazing memories of my grandparents house on the Isle of Hope right on the savannah river. Swimming in the river, taking mud baths and swimming with dolphins. As an adult now its crazy how much we take for granted. The following photos are a few of my favorite things on the island, the sea turtle conservatory, the Tybee Island pier, the crazy beautiful sea oats and incredible sunsets! I am soooooo ready to be there, now!!!!

What We’re Worth.

Today I want to talk about something I’m very passionate about. It is a hard topic to share but I had to get it out there, so here it goes… This topic seems to be one a lot of beauty, wedding and event professionals have a hard time discussing… the topic is paying a Makeup Artist what we’re worth. Now this goes for makeup artists who are seasoned and have been working for 5 or more years as a freelancer and understand how to do every eye shape, face shape and skin color they could possibly come in contact with on a job. To be honest… if you can’t do that, you shouldn’t be charging money for your services.

So I know at the end of the day makeup services are a luxury, meaning it is a “want” not a “need”. Those who are fortunate to be able to afford professional hair and makeup services I’m talking to you. First off let me say, thank you for wanting to hire us, you help keep food on a single mom’s table, an art student in school and an aspiring entrepreneur in business. But can we have real talk for just a min? Ok, let’s put on our big girl panties. It’s time to start paying us what we’re worth. I’m talking to you fellow wedding vendor or beauty industry professional. I’m talking to you bride and aspiring model. Do your research. If your looking to hire a $$ a face makeup artist, check their business out! Are they insured? Licensed? Are they operating legally? Do they have knowledge of sanitation and product quality? Do they offer airbrush and multiple service options? So many factors go into a makeup artists pricing. There is so much more to what we do than just paint faces. We do so many things leading up to a brides wedding or clients event day, just to name a few….. We create a bridal schedule, we create contracts and hire lawyers, we are constantly cleaning and making sure our kit is up to par and buying the best professional quality makeup products, we are organizing, calling, booking, emailing and networking our butts off! We take continuing education classes and look for the best rates on liability and property insurance. We network with other artists to stay relevant and keep our skill level excellent. If I can be as frank to say, the artists you want to hire are in the $$$ range not the $$ range, you truly do get what you pay for and your face is a precious thing, treat it right and hire someone who can make the most important day, your wedding or event day, truly the best ever!

To those artists charging $$ a face, why? You are worth more than that. You are hurting the industry as a whole and teaching clients to not pay what we’re truly worth. Let’s all step up! If your charging that because you need more practice, go practice but don’t charge a client that’d be willing to pay $$$ to just get work for “experience” go do a bunch of styled shoots, work on family and friends to get your name out there, network, hustle! You’re not alone, we all started from the bottom and made our way. I, by no means am at my ideal price and ideal client yet. It takes time, patience and lots of practice! My goal is to have a long term mindset and do today what will set me up for tomorrow. I’m in this for the long haul not to just make a quick buck. I want every man or women that sits in my chair to have an experience they will never forget!

Brides and those seeking professional makeup services… Think twice about who, what and why you hire that person. Do your research and make sure you are truly getting what you want and what you pay for. Your wedding day is the day you’ll be looking back on for years and years to come. So make sure you truly hire a professional, we have your back and won’t let you down!

JULIANNA

Hello Beauties!

I just realized I never shared this amazing fashion shoot with the beautiful JULIANNA. The final product sure did blow me away, thanks to Sufia Huq Photo. Months of planning and collaboration went into this day. Picking out color palettes, locations, outfits. But most importantly finding the perfect model. Honestly once we started shooting and the lighting, the colors, the style, Julianna, it literally all collided in one moment and my breath was taken away. Also can I just say, this was Julianna’s first shoot modeling and WOW she killed it! There is something super intense about the creative process. An intensity that is filled with hope yet fear. Hope that everything you had in your mind comes fourth and then fear that it may just totally flop! Well this was a creative release that was well worth the pressure!

For this makeup look I wanted Julianna’s skin to shine! Every curve of her face to have definition and glow. My product of choice was, Temptu, silicon base airbrush makeup. I used all airbrush, foundation, blush, highlight, contour and eye shadow. In some of the last photos I added some glitter lips, seriously, SO FUN! I switched up her lip color three times. See if you can spot it. 😉 I also styled her hair, which those that know me, I do NOT do hair. But for this I wanted a super simple look with all focus on her face. I went with a middle part slicked back low pony tail and it totally completed her look more than I realized once we got on location to shoot, it fit perfect!

The vintage fur coat was actually my nana’s whom my mom now owns and lent us, truly the shoot wouldn’t have been the same without it! Fur coat for the win! I love this shoot because it can be used for spring/summer and fall/winter fashion. The crushed velvet gold dress perfect for spring and so versatile! And can we just talk about the red velvet block heels, all sorts of YES! I wish I bought a pair in my size!

In the middle of shooting we noticed a car that fit perfectly into our color palette and well the guy was kind enough to let us shoot with its awesome paint job, lifted spinners and all. Oh Orlando, I love you. I hope you enjoyed my breakdown of this shoot, now go enjoy some photos… Let me know what you think.

A Beautiful Bride in Pure White.

Hello Beauties!

I am so excited to share this stunning wedding! I was so so honored to do makeup on the beautiful, Shannon and her girls. She found me last minute and boy am I glad I happen to have that day available, especially during this crazy busy wedding season. It was meant to be! I am so excited to say, this is the busiest season to date for Marin Makeup, woo hoo!

For Shannon’s look we went with timeless and romantic. All mainly neutral tones with a pretty pink pout for lips. She is absolutely gorgeous so it really didn’t take much to glam her up just a bit. She chose to do Airbrush foundation and so glad she did because Airbrush for brides is my ABSOLUTE FAV! If your looking to step up your makeup game then you have to try out, Temptu’s new hydra lock airbrush foundation formula, it will seriously change your life!

For her highlight I used an oldie but a goodie in my kit and now that I’m thinking about it I’m almost out and need to get more soon. But any who it’s CARA Cosmetics highlight in Bal Harbour, its the perfect neutral taupe, white highlight with just the right amount of shimmer and no glitter. Tarte also makes a similar shade in their Pro Glow palette which is another go-to in my kit.

For her lips I used a really pretty gel liner in soft pink mauve with a mint baby doll pink gloss on top. For the gloss I tracked down a mint formula at request of the bride and I landed with Aveda’s nourish-mint rehydrating lip glaze in shade “Morning Rose.” Her lips needed a bit of TLC so I did Aveda’s feed my lips pure nourish-mint lip treatment while I worked on her face and once time came around to apply lip color they were soft and ready to go, thanks Aveda! Also just fyi I am not sponsored by any of these brands just sharing whats in my kit and why I love it.

The groom had a bit of a mishap at his bachelor party and had a big scab that was healing right in the middle of his forehead. He requested I stay to help him out and make him look presentable for photos. Boy am I glad I have so much male makeup experience from my days at the Golf Channel. It was a quick fix with a little corrector, concealer and powder and he was good to go! At the very end I posted a photo of him you’ll be able to see not a dang thing, cause y’all, I’m good like that, wink face.

So enough of me talk, talking about this amazing day. Go check out these photos for yourself by amazing photographer Katie Mick Photography.

The stuff dreams are made of….

Hello Everyone! Today I am so excited to share the details of an amazing shoot I was privileged to plan and help style with the amazing Erika Reiner Photography and Model, Wendy Biagioni. It turned out to be one for the memory books! Makeup for me has always been a journey of self expression and learning professional techniques to take my career to the next level and this shoot did ALL that and more! I took on my first under water photo shoot and well, not to brag, killed it!

A lot of makeup artistry is research. Research for the look, the style and the technique. This shoot required a whole new skill set from me, under water, full WATER PROOF makeup! And well as a Beauty Makeup Artist I was ready take on the challenge. It all started with a phone call from a photographer who happened to find me on Instagram ( Can I just say how grateful I am for social media! ) we talked and hit off for almost an hour, wow hello meet cute! Then began the planning to find the perfect products to tackle this challenge.

I’m used to using the amazing and industry standard TEMPTU airbrush makeup. So for this challenge due to some research I decided to give their new formula a try called Temptu Hydra lock Perfecta Base Airbrush Foundation. I have always been a big fan of Temptu Airbrush makeup in the SB ( silicon base) formula but this new stuff from TEMPTU is the bomb! When Wendy came out of the water looking perfect, I got goosebumps and it took everything in me to not say as loud as I could, “YES I DID IT!!!!!!” As a makeup artist I am constantly critiquing myself and wanting to grow. More work comes from more practice and more knowledge and most importantly more experience. Needless to say this shoot did just that and more. Soooooo all that to say this shoot was the stuff dreams are made of and honestly there is WAY more where this came from…. Now go enjoy these amazing photos captured by the amazing Erika Reiner Photography.
