Beauty Always Sees the Best

Hi Beauties!

I wanted to write this for all my fellow beauty sisters working in the beauty industry. We are in middle of the busiest season of the year for our businesses and I wanted you to know, I SEE YOU! I see you busting your butt to work in a service industry that a lot of times has no thanks. I see you working three jobs in a day and then rushing home to make dinner for your kids. I see you hustling to network and make the best connections possible to get your name out there. I see you doing research and taking all the continuing education you possibly can. I SEE YOU!

The beauty industry is filled with immense possibilities and I am so grateful for work! As a makeup artist my skills are what pays the bills but even more than that, those whom I surround myself with are the ones who can get me my next big break. I’m so grateful to have found a tribe of gals who, “GET IT.” They get that professionalism and communication are keys to a successful beauty business. They get that skills can be learned but attitude is who you are. We work face to face with women who struggle with things that we may never have the answer to but for just a few minutes we can offer some light at the end of the tunnel and leave them feeling like the queen they truly are!

In the middle of this busy season, take a minute to reflect on all the people you’ve encountered so far this year. Did you stop and take a min? Ok, now just think, ALL those men and women wouldn’t be the same without YOU. So I want you to know if no one has told you lately, I SEE YOU. Keep showing up and doing your best. Beauty always sees the best. The world is a better place because of YOU!

The Girl Boss Edition

Hey Beauties!

The term, “Girl Boss” has been used so much the past few years and you know what, I AM LOVING IT! So what does it mean to be a Girl Boss? Are there qualifications? Who are the Girl Bosses to look up to? Am I a Girl Boss? How do I become a Girl Boss? Some of these questions may be swirling through your mind. By no means am I an expert to quantify and qualify anyone to be Girl Boss but I will say being raised by entrepreneurs and being an entrepreneur myself for the past 7 years I may know a thing or too about being a GIRL BOSS! Oh yeah, baby!

In working as a makeup artist most of my clients are the ultimate Girl Bosses, Lawyers, CEO’s, Momma’s, Politicians, Pastors, Creative Entrepreneurs, Singers, Dancers, Actors and so many more! Today I wanted to showcase a few of my clients whom have been an absolute dream to work for because they truly are changing the world!

First up is Sofia Boyer of Magnolia Creative Studio, her work is incredibly beautiful for it being of the tech kind. 😉 She helps women business owners with all her magical website and brand building skills. She offers some amazing services, go check her out!

Next up, the ever so sweet Erika Reiner of Erika Reiner Photography. She has an incredible eye and is seriously the sweetest person to work with! The cool thing about Erika is I’ve had the pleasure to work both for her and with her. She specializes in natural light lifestyle photography, you should go check her out!

Lastly is the ultimate Girl Boss I’ve had the honor to work with many times both on production sets and photography shoots. She is the multi talented, Pam Hoelzle of How To Start Something and Dear Rockstar. She has incredible business sense and is a true encourager to help you turn your passion into a profit! You have to go check out her work!

Being a Girl Boss is more of a state of mind than a state of status. We are ALL Girl Bosses is our own right and walk with your head held high no mater what you do. Now, I’ve showed you a few Girl Bosses I know personally but I wanted to share some I look up to in the beauty industry as well, whom I haven’t met yet (speaking that in faith). They work so hard and are crazy talented at what they do!

First up is Lisa Eldridge, one of the most respected and experienced makeup artists in the world. She has a vast knowledge of makeup history which I find super fascinating! She has an incredible book called “Face Paint: The Story of Makeup” Go check it out, her knowledge and skills are outta this world! She also just launched a fabulous jewelry line that is absolutely stunning!

Lastly is the ultimate Girl Boss, who coined the phrase for our current generation and that’s  Sofia Amoruso, the author of Girl Boss, Founder and former CEO of Nasty Gal and current founder and CEO of Girlboss Media. She is the authority on all things vintage and women in business. Netflix even did a hilarious series about her life and the start up of her multi million dollar franchise! A favorite quote of hers is, “A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”

I hope you feel encouraged to follow your dreams and don’t give up! Let’s be the women who help straighten each others crowns. Now, go on and turn your passion into profit like I did with my makeup and skincare business. You can do it!

4 Steps To The Perfect Smokey Eyeliner

Hey Beauties!

This is one of my favorite looks, my go to get outta the house quick look that looks like you spent an hour perfecting it! This is great for all eye shapes and all skill levels can perfect it, no problem!

Step 1:

  • Grab a creamy, long lasting black or brown pencil eyeliner, my go to right now is a drugstore brand. I got it in my Influenster box. Influenster is such a great way to try new products completely free, all you do is fill out a few surveys a month. Anyways, I digress.. Here is the link for the pencil I am currently personally using.
  • Make a line half way, stating at the outer corner on your lid as close to the lash line as possible then stop half way.

Step 2:

  • Grab a eyeliner smudge brush. Make sure its a smudge brush not a precise brush. Start at the outer corner, smudge and blend out the line to make it have no defined lines and bring it across the whole lid this time. Try a brush like this.

Step 3:

  • Grab a black or brown powder liner. It can be a loose powder or a pressed powder. Currently I just switched to a new product that I am loving! You can also just use a black or brown eyeshadow.
  • Grab your smudge liner brush again and dip the brush a bit into the powder then start at the outer corner and press into the liner and blend. Work it into the line all the way cross keeping close to the lash line as possible, this sets it and helps it stay all day too. Pro Tip!

Step 4:

  • Dip the brush into a little more powder and on the outside corner smudge up till you hit your brow bone. Then grab a more fluffy shadow brush, use as little powder as possible (for an even better look grab a clean fluffy shadow brush) and blend out all the steps mainly sticking to outer corner. Blend, blend, blend! This creates the look of a bigger eye yet keeping it natural, smokey & sexy. Add a little bronze or warm tone shadow to the lid and now your good to go!
  • Try this product its a great multitaskser for eyes and cheeks for a warm matte bronze shadow.
  • Also try this for a little bronze sparkle it’s an all time favorite of mine! Use the title picture as a reference and inspiration. Picture also shown below.

All recommendations and skills are from my personal arsenal and in no way have I been sponsored or told to use or purchase any of these products. I believe in this technique and products and spend my own hard earned money on them.

I hope you learned something new and have fun blending, blending, blending!

Countdown to Summer Vacation!!!

This may not be something to actually write a blog about but why not! This is the first summer in 4 years my hubby and I are taking a legit summer vacation and to say I’m freaking out excited is an understatement!!! Do any of you remember that movie ” The Last Song” …. (The early days of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth love story)  Well that’s where we’ll be going! Tybee Island, GA! Tybee has such serious charm, for all those that know the amazing charm of Savannah, GA… this is that, plus a laid back beach attitude, yes please! My grandparents own a beach house in Tybee Island and its always been a family tradition to go and stay. This time will be all together different though, our best friends from VA will be joining us whom we haven’t seen in 4 years!!!! SO SO SO EXCITED!!!

I have such amazing memories of my grandparents house on the Isle of Hope right on the savannah river. Swimming in the river, taking mud baths and swimming with dolphins. As an adult now its crazy how much we take for granted. The following photos are a few of my favorite things on the island, the sea turtle conservatory, the Tybee Island pier, the crazy beautiful sea oats and incredible sunsets! I am soooooo ready to be there, now!!!!

What We’re Worth.

Today I want to talk about something I’m very passionate about. It is a hard topic to share but I had to get it out there, so here it goes… This topic seems to be one a lot of beauty, wedding and event professionals have a hard time discussing… the topic is paying a Makeup Artist what we’re worth. Now this goes for makeup artists who are seasoned and have been working for 5 or more years as a freelancer and understand how to do every eye shape, face shape and skin color they could possibly come in contact with on a job. To be honest… if you can’t do that, you shouldn’t be charging money for your services.

So I know at the end of the day makeup services are a luxury, meaning it is a “want” not a “need”. Those who are fortunate to be able to afford professional hair and makeup services I’m talking to you. First off let me say, thank you for wanting to hire us, you help keep food on a single mom’s table, an art student in school and an aspiring entrepreneur in business. But can we have real talk for just a min? Ok, let’s put on our big girl panties. It’s time to start paying us what we’re worth. I’m talking to you fellow wedding vendor or beauty industry professional. I’m talking to you bride and aspiring model. Do your research. If your looking to hire a $$ a face makeup artist, check their business out! Are they insured? Licensed? Are they operating legally? Do they have knowledge of sanitation and product quality? Do they offer airbrush and multiple service options? So many factors go into a makeup artists pricing. There is so much more to what we do than just paint faces. We do so many things leading up to a brides wedding or clients event day, just to name a few….. We create a bridal schedule, we create contracts and hire lawyers, we are constantly cleaning and making sure our kit is up to par and buying the best professional quality makeup products, we are organizing, calling, booking, emailing and networking our butts off! We take continuing education classes and look for the best rates on liability and property insurance. We network with other artists to stay relevant and keep our skill level excellent. If I can be as frank to say, the artists you want to hire are in the $$$ range not the $$ range, you truly do get what you pay for and your face is a precious thing, treat it right and hire someone who can make the most important day, your wedding or event day, truly the best ever!

To those artists charging $$ a face, why? You are worth more than that. You are hurting the industry as a whole and teaching clients to not pay what we’re truly worth. Let’s all step up! If your charging that because you need more practice, go practice but don’t charge a client that’d be willing to pay $$$ to just get work for “experience” go do a bunch of styled shoots, work on family and friends to get your name out there, network, hustle! You’re not alone, we all started from the bottom and made our way. I, by no means am at my ideal price and ideal client yet. It takes time, patience and lots of practice! My goal is to have a long term mindset and do today what will set me up for tomorrow. I’m in this for the long haul not to just make a quick buck. I want every man or women that sits in my chair to have an experience they will never forget!

Brides and those seeking professional makeup services… Think twice about who, what and why you hire that person. Do your research and make sure you are truly getting what you want and what you pay for. Your wedding day is the day you’ll be looking back on for years and years to come. So make sure you truly hire a professional, we have your back and won’t let you down!
